The holiday season is not far away! Online shopping festival starts from mid-October until the end of December. Such as the vworld’s largest online shopping spree dubbed the “Double 11” on November 11, which is named after Singles’ Day by the Chinese. Then the American’s Black Friday on November 23 followed by Cyber Monday. Not far behind comes the “Double 12” on December 12, as referring to the E-commerce Holiday by Alibaba, and last but not least, the e-commerce Ecstasy “Christmas”!

Consumers Spending Preferences

According to a survey by KPMG China and GS1 Hong Kong, Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese consumers favour online shopping when there are e-commerce sales and hours-long promotional events. Within these shopping festivals, “Double 11” is by far the most popular festival favoured by Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese consumers at 37 percent and 70 percent in respectively. Then followed by Cyber Monday as the second most favourite festival by Hong Kong consumers.

Total spending on Alibaba’s “Double 11” in 2017 exceeded $25 billion US dollars, which is equivalent to 168.2 billion Chinese yuan.

Here are some insights about last year’s online shopping spree according to the surveys done by the authority.

  • Over 40 percent of consumers rely on mobile devices to do online purchase
  • 42 percent of Millennials (age 18 to 34) tend to use mobile devices to shop online
  • Almost 90 percent of e-commerce merchants considered that e-commerce increases their income source
  • Over 60% of e-commerce merchants planned to increase investment in e-commerce and digital marketing at least 10% more in the next 12 months
